How to build eBay titles that sell?

In today’s article I want to talk about writing great titles for your eBay listings! 

By great I want to say a title that:

Gives you the highest possible position in the search results;

Sells your product effectively;

It makes your ad stand out from the crowd!

You may be thinking: what is so special and important about titles, they are simple and easy, right? Well, listing titles may seem easy, but the question remains, why does the majority on eBay seem to have been written by a 3-year-old boy?

And it is not just the visual of those poorly written listing titles; they also affect search positions and clickthrough rates! So not only do they look bad, the listing of titles directly affects your sales for sure! Essentially, the title and image of the gallery are the most important things in your lists, as they determine if someone will click to read the rest of your description.

So let’s learn how to write the perfect headline on eBay’s list for maximum clicks and the best position in search results!

What to do and what NOT to do when we build our eBay listing titles?

If you check out the eBay Help section for writing good titles and list descriptions, here is what you have to do when writing listing titles:

Use descriptive keywords to convey clearly and accurately what you are selling. You can use up to 80 characters. You don’t need to use all 80 characters.

Include specific items. For example, include size, color, and status.

Specify exactly what your item is, even if your title repeats the category name.

Do not use multiple synonyms or plural. It is unnecessary for search and can make your title less attractive to buyers.

Miss punctuation marks and asterisks.

Don’t include “wow” or “look”. Buyers are not looking for words like these.

Use the correct spelling.

Don’t worry about creating a grammatically correct sentence.

Do not overdo it with abbreviations

Do not use all caps.

I agree with all of these! If you follow these basic guidelines, the titles of your listings will be just fine! To make them extremely good, follow these tips beelow:

1. ALWAYS start the title of your list with the MAIN KEYWORD, or at least put it in the beginning of your title. This makes a crucial role in the search results. You want your product to be mentioned at the top of your title if you want to rank higher in the search result.

So, for example, if you’re selling black covers for the iPhone 11, make sure the words “black,” “cover,” and “iPhone 11” are at the beginning of your title, like this:

2. Use capital letters in most words to make it easier to read the title of your listing.

Take a look at these two titles:

Which one is better? 

3. Use capital letters in force words. Strong words are usually the key phrases that best describe the product for sale OR promote function or benefit.

If there is something you want to emphasize, use it. For example:

ORIGINAL Adobe Elements 22 – BOX | FREE delivery within the UK!

With this headling, you emphasize that the article of sale is a real product, as many people are afraid to not buy eBay software because of the many copies that are being sold. Also, in capital letters, the word FREE gives you extra attention to the fact that shipping is free for this item

Don’t fill in the title with unrelated words just to make it 80 characters!

Sometimes less is better and short headlines can actually improve your clickthrough rate. If not much can be said about the item sold, do not do the stuff or stuff it with keywords – it is of no use at all.

You can usually fill in unused characters by simply covering more product features or shipping details or a free gift that you include with each purchase.

There are some things that we should NEVER do when we are building a tittle. 

We don’t have to include misleading information or false information.

We don’t have to use obscene or profane language.

We don’t have to include website addresses, phone number, or email addresses.

We don’t have to use brand names other than the specific for the item that manufactured our item.

For example:

We can’t list item named Samsung 20 Car charger.

We can list Car Charger compatible with Samsung 20

So no matter what you think or how lazy you are, you need to learn how to write good headlines on eBay so you can crush the benefits of increased clicks, increased sales, and the most important, increased profits!

These OOS orders canceled have to be no more than 0.5% of your total transactions for the last three months. 

Valid Trackings:

As we already know, you are required and have to upload valid tracking numbers for all of your transactions within the handling time that you promised. eBay counts the valid trackings after the scan from the carrier. 95% of your sales should meet these requirements to become Top Rated Seller on eBay.

You can check this evaluation for your account from your seller’s Hub. eBay updates these statistics on every 20th of each month. You have to keep an eye on it. It’s very important for your business. These statistics are for the last three months.

Here are a few more requirements:

  • Been active for at least 90 days
  • At least 100 or more transactions with a minimum of $1000 in sales (US buyers only) over the last 12 months
  • Adhere to eBay’s selling practices policy

eBay has officially announced the introduction of eBay Managed Delivery, an end-to-end fulfillment service that will be available to US sellers in 2020. It is essentially being able to ship your merchandise into eBay warehouses and they will handle it, store it, pick it, pack it, ship it and send it off to the customer. Yes, you’re right. They are copying Amazon’s FBA.

Now with that being said, there’s going to be a lot of obvious differences, eBay is not Amazon and vice-versa and they’re gonna have their own way of doing it. We still don’t have a lot of details at this point, even the announcement they kind of gave us was an overview which is obvious but does not include a lot of details. We don’t know the pricing, or if there’s going to be a special plan or a membership of any kind. We don’t know what the packing fees are going to be, as well as details about the inbound shipping.

Amazon has shipping discounts and bulk and logistics in multiple warehouses. We’re heading out to wait and see what eBay will add as information about this program, but they are fighting with amazon and that’s for sure! In the presentation, eBay said that they are doing it their way. They said the managed delivery will include smart partnering warehouses, built on their technology and all this will be managed through eBay Seller Hub.

You can see a huge drop in promoted listing sales and also a big drop in impressions. This is a 99% sign that your account is flagged.

Is copying and pasting eBay titles tell the eBay that you are a dropshipper?

Absolutely YES!

We all know these dropshippers that steal titles and descriptions from other sellers. Also, placing a copy of Amazon or a different supplier titles and descriptions would result the same. eBay can detect repetitive texts and can easily understand that you are a dropshipper. So you have to create unique titles and descriptions (as long as the list allows) to give you a less chance of being flagged.

Delivery of your products from different places

After uploading a tracking on eBay they know from where you are sending the package. Different shipment points are just a sign that you are not sending items from your home or business address, but you are most likely a dropshipper.

Like any business, there would be some difficulties and problemes ,but the dropshipping business will never end. The rules just change and we have to adapt if we still want to make money. The faster we adapt, the better we will be as a online entrepreneurs.

Following eBay’s Autumn Seller Release in 2018, eBay introduced automatic returns. They even put this out as a separate announcement board post. 

“As we recently announced, we’re making further improvements to the returns experience on eBay. Today a large number of returns may require the buyer to wait multiple days before they can access a return label. This drives buyer anxiety, churn and an increased likelihood of the buyer asking eBay to step in to help. As a result, we’ll be increasing the frequency in which the buyer will have immediate access to a label on domestic returns, regardless of why they want to return the item. This means that when a buyer opens an ‘Item not as described’ return request, it will be automatically accepted if it’s within the seller’s offered return window. We’ll be rolling out these changes over this year, starting on September 17th, and will listen to your feedback as we ramp up this new functionality.”

A lot of sellers aren’t particularly happy with this change, because of the way how returns will be processed. From the seller’s perspective, eBay is trying to take control over seller’s return experiences and to be able to make a decision on a case by case basis.

The current eBay seller return options are few:

  • Send the buyer a message if you need more information
  • Refund the buyer / they keep the item
  • Offer a partial refund and allow them to keep the item
  • Accept the return

eBay Automated return option

  • RMA number – let eBay know whether you would like to include an RMA number to each return label.
  • Send a refund – Buyer keeps the item and the seller has to fully refund them
  • Approve a return – Automatically approve a return based on the price and the reason for it.

A lot of eBay sellers are not happy with this update as I mentioned before. They are frightened that the buyers will choose the “Significantly Not As Described” option as a way to get free postage for the return. This will ultimately impact sellers leading to 4% surcharges”

Also “Buyers will abuse returns using it as a try before you buy service”

What should you do? 

It is impossible to disable the automatic return function, so as dropshippers we need to find other solutions and a way to work with these returns.

For this to happen, we must do two things:

1) Make buyers understand that we want them to contact us to get a label

2) Send our buyers a shipping label manually, so they can send us the items using this specific label

3) Go to eBay return settings and turn on the RMA option. RMA stands for Return Merchandise Authorization number. This will allow you to provide a return label and you won’t be charged for an expensive one from eBay. As a dropshipper, this is very important because we get our labels for free from the supplier.

eBay is putting a lot of obstacles in front of sellers, but we need to learn how to deal with them. Every business has problems and dropshipping is no exception, but with every solved problem we are getting stronger.

Everyone knows that one of the most important steps you have to take when dropshipping is choosing a supplier. Among so many options, today we’d like to discuss one of the most preferred suppliers among dropshippers – Aliexpress.

Why Aliexpress?

If you are just starting your dropshipping journey, Aliexpress is probably the best option for you. In order to boost your Ebay account, you have to make frequent sales and maintain a positive feedback. Using Aliexpress as a supplier, you can choose among huge inventory of low-priced items. 
The profits you will make will not be high on each sale, it will be quantity over quality, but you have to remember hat consistency is key.

Things to keep in mind:

It’s recommended that you choose carefully the supplier whose products you are planning to sell. It’s a good idea to order samples, so that you can see yourself the product you are selling. Although we believe that the “chinese quality” popular opinions are just myths, as most of the suppliers from Aliexpress are offering good quality products, it won’t hurt to do a little research. Also keep an eye on the feedback of the suppliers, as this is a way to guarantee the quality of the items. On the bright side – even if a customer is not satisfied with the quality of the product, the loss would not be that much of a problem.

When it comes to AliExpress dropshipping, lots of the suppliers who you’ll be interacting with will be Chinese, which means that their English isn’t always perfect. However, you can always contact the suppliers in advance to get a sense of their level of proficiency before doing business with them.
Larger suppliers are typically quite responsive as they’ll have sales teams managing your orders and can answer your questions via live chat or email.

Shipping is a delicate matter when dealing with China. Your task is to define your shipping policy, and then display it on your listing to set clear customer expectations. With the commonly favored ePacket delivery option, it typically takes only 7-14 days for a package to reach the US from China. In addition, some suppliers keep their most popular products in US warehouses, which will mean your delivery will be even quicker.
Also, it’s crucial that you provide excellent customer service while the item is being shipped and delivered. For example, contact the customer right after the order has been placed, again when the item is shipped (with tracking number so they can track the package) and finally when the order is received, so you can ask if they are satisfied with their purchase. We all love to get attention and feel important, so they will surely stop by to leave a positive feedback or/and buy something from us again! 🙂


One of the advantages of Aliexpress is that most of the items contain variations – different sizes and colors. We know that this is a great thing for all dropshippers, as most clients are more likely to buy your item if it has variations. It’s a common thing on Aliexpress for all variations to be priced the same, which is even cooler. It’s a common opinion that while Aliexpress has such huge inventory, you don’t have to worry about the item becoming out of stock. This is not 100% true, since a hot selling item might become out of stock quite quickly. Although it would be restocked in a few days, no one would enjoy the shock of finding out that they have sold an out of stock item. Then again, these are things that you simply don’t have to worry about when using WSG to dropship from Aliexpress. We check for stock/price changes on hourly basis and update your item accordingly.

Choosing an Ebay template:

To exploit to maximum you can use Cash back service. Everytime you will order the products for your buyers from aliexpress, the cashback service will give you back up to 18% if you buy from your cashback account.

Aliexpress has a lot of products, but keep in mind that you need to choose the most profitable products to dropship. 
When searching products, try to search keywords like ,,As seen on TV’’ ,,trending 2019′’ ,,top 2019′’ ,,best selling’’. Try to look for Chinese brands like Xiaomi, LETV, Meizu. 
Don’t forget to always use faster shipping method, for UK, USA costumers Epacket is the best. 
Try your best to market products as best as possible, set nice pictures, good descriptions, add as many item’s specifics as you can. All these things will surely pay off.

1. Listing with variations is now available through WSG


Variation listings are often preferred by many ebay sellers. We all know that while shopping, having a lot of choices regarding size, color, material, etc. is a lot more convenient than having only 1 option. That often results in customers buying more than one piece of the item that you are selling, which boosts your views/sales history and you end up being shown in the Ebay search page. A variation listing on Ebay, despite of having for example 5 different variations, is counted as one single listing, therefore the fees that we are paying are less than what we’ve would have to pay if we list the items individually. We sell more and pay less fees, isn’t that cool?
